About the museum
The Esperanto Museum in Svitavy was ceremoniously opened on 20 September 2008. It was established in cooperation between the town of Svitavy, the Municipal Museum and Gallery, the Czech Esperanto Association and the local Esperanto Friends' Club. Its operation was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the town of Svitavy, the association and the American Esperantic Studies Foundation. Since October 2011 the museum has also been the official seat of the Czech Esperanto Association, and it is a non-profit project run by volunteers.
The museum is located on the ground floor of the Ottendorfer House, which the American patron and native son Valentin Oswald Ottendorfer had built in 1892 as a public library. The permanent exhibition traces the origins and history of the Esperanto movement in the Czech Republic and worldwide, its culture, its rich literature in Esperanto, and events in the Svitavy region. Exhibition panels, display cases with books, printed matter to browse through and multimedia files on a touchscreen are available.
The museum space also serves as the reading room of the library of the Czech Esperanto Association, which holds almost twenty thousand volumes in Esperanto. The local Esperanto Friends' Club holds meetings, language courses and guided tours in the museum, as well as travel-talk evenings, stamp fairs and public events, for example the Marzipan Christmas and the programme of the Museum Night.
