About the museum

The first ideas for a museum in Kamenice appeared in 1904, when the first parts of a collection began to be formed from gifts from local people. The museum opened only on 25 August 1940. The collections were first moved from a school cabinet to several rooms of the town hall, and after eighteen years to the former glass sample building on Palackého ulice, where an exhibition on the history of the town and an exhibition on the life and work of the composer Vítězslav Novák, a native of Kamenice (opened 1970), were set up.

In 2004 the museum moved to the southern wing of the Kamenice castle, which is administered by the Uměleckoprůmyslové museum v Praze (Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague). The new permanent exhibition Muzeum pro všechny smysly was opened in May 2010. It shows visitors more than 750 years of the town's history through sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing, and encourages them to take an active part. The museum also organises short-term exhibitions and cooperates with the Museum of Decorative Arts on the Hračkobraní summer festival of toys made from natural materials.
