About the museum

The museum building was erected in 1679 by the lords of Adlersthurm as a hospital, which from the start depended on endowments from the lord and from wealthy townspeople. After the great fire of the town in 1806 the clergy were housed in it, school lessons and services took place there, and relics from the church of Sts Peter and Paul under restoration were stored there. Around the 1930s the building already housed the museum once, but after the war the objects were taken to the museum in Česká Lípa, and the building served as a library until the 1980s. After that it fell into disrepair.

Today's museum was created after reconstruction within a Czech-Polish project for the development of tourism in the border region, focused on the tourist use of Mimoň and the Polish town of Złotoryja. It is run by the contributory organisation Kultura Mimoň.

The permanent exhibition on the ground floor traces the history of Mimoň and its surroundings up to 1948 and shows, for example, archaeological finds and a model of the church of Sts Peter and Paul before the fire of 1806. A separate room is devoted to the castle, which stood on náměstí 1. máje (1 May Square) and was demolished in 1985, and to the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. A rarity is the mortuary chamber preserved in its original form, with an exhibition on funerary practices. On the first floor and in the attic thematic exhibitions alternate, and outside there is a herb garden with an information board. Near the museum stands the complex of the Kaple Božího hrobu (Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre).
