About the museum
The Municipal Museum in Moravská Třebová is housed in a neo-Renaissance building from 1906 that was built specifically for museum purposes. Both its creation and the basis of its valuable collections were financed by the patron Ludwig Vincenz Holzmaister, a native of the town and an American entrepreneur. The building, a listed cultural monument since 1958, originally served to store his exotic objects from journeys in Asia and Africa.
The history of the institution goes back to 1872. After 1945 and the departure of the German population the continuity was broken, and the building later decayed for a long time because of its dangerous condition. The turning point came with an extensive reconstruction completed in 1992. Today the museum links the local traditions of the Hřebečsko region with Holzmaister's worldwide legacy, centred on the Egyptian mummy Hereret.
After an almost two-year reconstruction the new permanent exhibition The Town and the World opened. It combines the concept of a town museum with that of a museum of world cultures and, instead of celebrating the traveller, focuses on interpreting cultures through their own protagonists, for example the Egyptian woman Hereret or the community of samurai. It also uses rare artefacts from the Wondrová family and Holzmaister's non-European collection.
