About the museum

On the south-eastern corner of the town of Moravská Třebová, from its founding in the mid-13th century, stood a castle of a noble steward, separated from the town by a deep moat. The early Renaissance residence was built by Ladislav Černohorský of Boskovice (c. 1455–1520), who invited craftsmen from Italy; the portal from 1492 is among the oldest preserved Renaissance monuments in the Czech Republic. The château also included a black kitchen built out in front of the castle moat, which is now open with the exhibition Barevná planeta.

The town flourished most under Ladislav Velen of Žerotín, who in 1611–1616 had three extensive arcaded wings added in the Mannerist style, according to plans by an Italian builder. Thanks to its patronage of artists, scholars and alchemists, Moravská Třebová earned the nickname “Moravian Athens.” After the Battle of White Mountain the estate was acquired by Karel of Liechtenstein, and the château served mainly as the seat of the estate administration.

After a fire in 1840 the newer château was repaired according to the original plans, while the old château was three-quarters demolished and the south-western wing was given an Empire-style appearance; the château thus acquired its present U-shaped ground plan. The Liechtensteins owned it until 1945. Today it is run by the Municipal Cultural Services of Moravská Třebová. It is a national cultural monument, with the tours Poklady Moravské Třebové and Středověká mučírna a alchymistická laboratoř doktora Bonaciny.
