Muzeum v přírodě Zubrnice

The only open-air museum in northern Bohemia: a village in the České středohoří (Bohemian Central Uplands) with a hop-growing farmstead, a school, a shop and a mill valley.

About the museum

The Zubrnice open-air museum was founded as a rescue project in a village that, after 1945, was marked by the expulsion of its original inhabitants. In the 1960s valuable buildings in the centre of the village were demolished, and even the church of St Mary Magdalene was threatened with demolition. In 1974 staff of the Ústí nad Labem Local History Museum learned of the situation. They succeeded in saving the church and, shortly afterwards, the log house no. 61, which today forms the core of the museum. The founder of the museum, František Ledvinka, transferred the house to museum management, and from 1977 a systematic build-up of a museum of folk architecture began.

The first and still most important route, the hop-growing farmstead no. 61, was opened to the public on 22 September 1988. After 1989 the restored church was completed, and exhibitions of a school, a shop and later a farm mill from Týniště were gradually added. Zubrnice village has been a conservation area since 1995. Most buildings stand in their original places, complemented by relocated structures and small church monuments rescued from the surroundings.

Between 2008 and 2012, thanks to cross-border cooperation with a German partner, an education centre was created in a manorial court (rychta) moved from Loubí, today the Dům z Loubí (House from Loubí). In 1994 the museum became independent and came under the National Heritage Institute; since December 2018 it has been part of the National Open-Air Museum, based in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. Today it offers four tour routes, exhibitions, educational programmes and seasonal events.

Highlights

  • Historic village with a school, a merchant’s shop and a village green
  • Hop-growing farmstead no. 61 with a fruit drying kiln and a pole hop garden
  • Permanent exhibition Chmel, který stavěl domy (Hops That Built Houses)
  • House from Loubí with short-term exhibitions and an education centre

Permanent exhibitions

  • Chmel, který stavěl domy – The permanent exhibition in the residential house of the farmstead no. 61 shows how the hop and fruit trade shaped the life and layout of the village. The farm buildings, a fruit drying kiln and a pole hop garden also belong to the farmstead.
  • Historická vesnice – A guided tour introduces the history of the village and the museum, with a merchant’s shop from the 1930s, the village school and the village green.
  • Dům z Loubí – The relocated manorial court, with an exhibition on the origins of the museum, a living room and a children’s corner, also serves as a base for short-term exhibitions and educational programmes.
