About the museum

The first exhibition of the micro-miniatures that now make up the museum’s collection took place in 1996 in St Petersburg. A year later the collection was presented in Prague on Jilská Street in the Old Town, and it then found a permanent home as a standing exhibition in the grounds of Strahov Monastery.

The Museum of Miniatures has been based at its permanent address, Strahovské nádvoří 11, since 1998. It is operated by the company PetroArt-Trade s.r.o. According to the museum, it is one of the largest collections of micro-miniatures in Europe and in the world; it comprises 29 exhibits.

The works of three artists are on display: Nikolai Aldunin (1956–2009), Edward Ter Ghazarian (1923–2012) and Anatoly Konenko (born 1954). Micro-miniature is an art form that spread in the late 1980s, and its works cannot be seen in detail with the naked eye, only through a microscope or magnifying glass. Their dimensions range from a few millimetres down to fractions of a millimetre.

The artists work by hand and must make most of their tools themselves. Traditional motifs include an inscription on a hair, a camel caravan in the eye of a needle and a shod flea.
