About the museum
The gallery is located in the Hradčany house U Luny at Úvoz 24, where the photographer Josef Sudek lived from 1959 until his death in 1976. Friends from the artistic community gathered in his flat, among them the poet Jaroslav Seifert, the painter Jan Zrzavý and the architect Otto Rothmayer. The flat gradually filled with paintings, frames, glass goblets, boxes and photographic equipment, and many famous series were created there, including Letecké vzpomínky, Velikonoční vzpomínky, Labyrinty and Skleněné labyrinty. It was also from here that Sudek set out to photograph Prague’s gardens, parks and beloved outskirts.
The Uměleckoprůmyslové museum v Praze (UPM) gradually acquired a substantial part of Sudek’s photographic estate between 1978 and 1988. In 1989 it also took over the administration of the artist’s flat, and in 1995 it opened the photographic Galerie Josefa Sudka there. The gallery is open only for the duration of exhibitions devoted to photography.
