About the museum

Salm Palace was built in 1800 to 1811 by Archbishop Vilém Florentin, Prince Salm-Salm, to a design by František Pavíček, on the site of several smaller noble houses. It was originally intended as a luxurious rental building. From 1811 it belonged to the Schwarzenbergs, who linked it with the neighbouring Schwarzenberg Palace, which is why it is also called the Little Schwarzenberg Palace. It is a Classicist three-winged building around a ceremonial courtyard.

In more recent times the palace was considerably damaged. In 2004 it was taken over by the National Gallery Prague, which converted it into exhibition spaces and continued the restoration of the neighbouring palace.

The collection display Umění Asie napříč prostorem a časem is complemented by exhibitions and accompanying programmes. The building is step-free and has lifts and accessible toilets.
