About the museum
Musoleum, whose name combines the words museum and mausoleum, is a gallery of the sculptor David Černý, opened in April 2023. It is housed in the brewhouse of the former Zlíchov distillery in Smíchov. The building, together with its chimney, is a listed monument, which is why it was not demolished when the site was cleared. It stood empty for around twenty years; in 2021 it was revitalised by the company Trigema in cooperation with the architectural studio Black n’ Arch.
The gallery offers about 1,200 m² of exhibition space spread over five floors. The permanent exhibition presents selected works by David Černý from more than three decades: his latest works and early creations, installations the public has not yet seen, and the artist’s designs and architectural projects. Černý became famous as early as 1991, when he painted a Soviet tank in Prague pink.
Besides the permanent exhibition, the gallery hosts exhibitions by guest artists, for example Eduard Palíšek, Adam Štech or Irena Krivanková. On the ground floor by the entrance there is a gallery café. Directly opposite the gallery, a private apartment designed by David Černý is also available for overnight stays.
