About the museum
The museum tradition in Prostějov goes back to the local Průmyslová jednota (Industrial Association), founded in 1883, which among other things worked to revive traditional crafts. The main museum building is the old town hall on T. G. Masaryka Square, whose development dates back to the early 16th century, when the town was growing economically and in construction, the main church was rebuilt and a castle began to take shape.
Another building is Špalíček, a pair of houses from the former Jewish ghetto on Uprkova and Hradební streets, which the Muzeum Prostějovska acquired in 1994 and which now serves as a gallery. The museum also includes an observatory, which has been operating since 1961 and has been part of a meteorological station since 1973; however, from 1 October 2026 it is closed to the public and to schools, and a new observatory is being planned. A branch is the Červený domek Petra Bezruče in Kostelec na Hané, the former home of the poet.
The museum is a contributory organization established by the Olomouc Region. Its collections cover archaeology, botany, ethnography, photography, geology, history, literary heritage, numismatics, documents and prints, applied arts and fine art. The permanent exhibitions present the prehistory of the Prostějov area, the geology of the region, life under serfdom between 1350 and 1850, and the poet Jiří Wolker; some exhibitions are temporarily closed for technical reasons and new versions are being prepared.
