About the museum
The Crown Fortlet (Korunní pevnůstka) is one of the few surviving structures of the original bastion fortifications of Olomouc. It was built as part of the fortress commissioned by Maria Theresa in the mid-18th century. Construction began in 1754, and two years later the site was enclosed by the Crown Wall with one five-sided bastion and two half-bastions. Inside the complex stand a Baroque powder magazine from 1756, the torso of an Empire-style guardhouse, and two artillery laboratory buildings from the second half of the 19th century.
After the fortress was decommissioned, the site remained in the hands of the army and was closed to the public after 1945. The army used it for storage, and in 1967 part of the site was turned into a botanical garden and rose garden. At the end of the 20th century the army handed the site over to the town free of charge, and in February 2008 the town sold it for a symbolic one koruna to the civic association Muzeum Olomoucké pevnosti, which began its gradual restoration.
Today the museum is housed in the Baroque powder magazine. The exhibition explains the construction of the fortlet and the history of Olomouc as a fortress town, and shows photographs, drawings and archaeological finds. On the first floor there is also a plaster model of the town with its fortress from the mid-18th century. The war powder magazine itself is unique in the Czech Republic. The site is also used for concerts and other cultural events.
