About the museum

Pevnost poznání (Fortress of Knowledge) is housed in the grounds of the Korunní pevnůstka, which belongs to the Baroque fortifications of Olomouc from the time of Maria Theresa. The fortress town came into being after the mid-18th century, and in 1857 a wooden building was erected behind the Korunní hradba (Crown Wall), in which artillery ammunition and gunpowder were stored.

After decades of use and subsequent decay, the building was converted in 2015 into the science museum of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University. The conversion was supervised by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ), which took care to preserve the original character of the monument.

Today visitors can find four interactive exhibitions focused on the history of the fortress, the world of water, the human brain and the physics of light. They are complemented by a digital planetarium, science workshops and educational programmes for schools, children, seniors and families.

Highlights

  • Four interactive exhibitions: Do historie!, Živá voda, Rozum v hrsti and Světlo a tma
  • Eight-metre model of the human brain and a gyroscope like the one used on the International Space Station
  • Flight simulator in the Živá voda exhibition
  • Digital planetarium
  • Historic building in the grounds of the Korunní pevnůstka

Permanent exhibitions

  • Do historie! – The history of the Olomouc fortress, told through a comic on twelve large-format panels; visitors put on historical uniforms, and animators explain life in the town of soldiers in the 18th century.
  • Živá voda – Water animals in larger-than-life size, magnifying glasses and microscopes, and a flight simulator.
  • Rozum v hrsti – An eight-metre model of the human brain, puzzles, ciphers and a gyroscope in which the visitor spins like a pilot.
