About the museum
The museum is housed in a Baroque house, No. 2 on Husova Street, which the town bought in 1957 and, after renovation, ceremonially opened on 28 August 1960. Originally a Museum of the Workers’ Movement and a memorial to Antal Stašek and Ivan Olbracht were established here. Earlier attempts to set up a town museum before the war were never completed.
Since 1991 it has operated as the Municipal Museum in Semily. In December of that year an extension with the Pojizerská galerie was opened, and in the 1990s the house gained exhibitions devoted to Pavel Tigrid and to personalities of the Semily area. In 1996 an exhibition on folk crafts and the housing of earlier generations was opened in the attic. In 2019 the building was adapted and linked to a garden and the town’s new tourist information centre.
Today the museum organises changing exhibitions in the main building and also manages the exhibition Healers of the Pojizeří and Podkrkonoší in the so-called herbal and healing complex on Jílovecká Street. It presents more than thirty personalities from the 18th century to the early 21st century and is an expanded version of the 2023 exhibition. In summer visitors can also see the Church of St Peter and St Paul and climb its tower.
