About the museum
The Muzeum Bučovice is located in the grounds of the Renaissance château, on the third above-ground floor of the west wing, and is a branch of the Muzeum Vyškovska. Its collection holds about 8,000 objects from the fields of history, ethnography and archaeology. The most valuable include Bučovice ceramics, so-called folk faience from the 18th and 19th centuries, especially Pleva's jug from the 1720s. The collection also includes straw-decorated shelves, reverse-glass paintings, a numismatic collection, a rare early print of the Bible benátská (Venetian Bible) from 1506, and memorabilia of Bučovice's Jewish community.
In September 2019 the new permanent exhibition Životem a časem po Bučovicku opened. It presents the history and culture of the region from prehistory to the 20th century, as well as the local fauna and flora. The individual rooms are devoted to making and using tools, weapons, building dwellings, social life, and death and burial. Visitors are guided by the figure of Jan Šembera of Boskovice, who built the château.
The exhibition is complemented by electronic presentations and interactive features: a hand quern, a replica of an early medieval rotary quern, an interactive crossbow, two working orchestrions and a replica of a late 19th-century high-wheeler bicycle. The tour route is followed by an exhibition hall with temporary exhibitions.
