About the museum

The château in Bučovice was built in 1575 to 1585 for Jan Šembera z Boskovic, one of the richest Moravian nobles of his time. The construction was led by the North Italian master Pietro Gabri, following plans by Jacopo Strada. The château is not a conversion of an older castle; it was created to an original design as a fortified palace (palazzo in fortezza).

From 1633 it was given a Baroque makeover under Giovanni Giacomo Tencalla. Maximilian of Liechtenstein acquired the château and the estate through marriage. In 1635 to 1637 a Mannerist fountain was built in the courtyard, and from 1681 the château served as the administrative centre of the estate. In 1722 the Liechtenstein central accounts office was located here, and no major building works followed afterwards. In 2001 the château was declared a national cultural monument.

The most striking features are the three-sided arcaded courtyard with ninety columns and about 540 reliefs, the painted halls, including the Hall of the Five Senses and the Imperial Room, and an extensive Renaissance garden reconstructed in 1960 to 1965. The château is now managed by the National Heritage Institute.
