About the museum
Museum work in Kyjov began at the start of the 20th century, when the mayor Severin Joklík asked the grammar school teacher Jan Kučera to organise the town archive and select historical objects from it for a retrospective exhibition of Czech towns in Napajedla. The growing collection moved in 1926 to the Renaissance château in the centre of town, which, together with the town hall, is the oldest architectural monument in Kyjov.
The Local History Museum is today a branch of the Masarykovo muzeum in Hodonín. The permanent exhibition, titled Museum pictum, was ceremonially opened on 26 June 2020 and uses interactive elements, information kiosks and audiovisual effects. On the ground floor, the natural science section leads through the forest, pond and vineyards of the Kyjov region; the historical section covers the founding of the town, the Piarists, the Capuchins and associational life. On the first floor, archaeology focuses on the 5th-century Langobard burial ground, and an ethnographic section presents regional folk costume and customs.
In the adjacent new building of the museum, short-term exhibitions, courses, craft demonstrations and lectures take place throughout the year. The museum also has a study library.
