About the museum

The museum in Rokycany was founded on the initiative of Professor Bohuslav Horák, after whom it is named. An attempt to found it in 1896 did not succeed, but Horák revived the idea in 1904, and the museum opened on 24 September 1905. At first it had only two rooms of the civic school at its disposal; from 1931 it occupied the whole building of the former girls’ school by the church.

Between 2003 and 2014 the museum was run by the Plzeň Region; from 2015 it has been a branch of the West Bohemian Museum in Plzeň. From 2016 it also uses a new exhibition hall created by reconstructing the former museum building in J. Knihy Street. The museum is a member of the Association of Museums and Galleries of the Czech Republic and has published its own yearbook (sborník) since 1988.

The collections focus on history, ethnography, palaeontology and the natural sciences, and are divided into eleven sub-collections. The permanent exhibitions can be visited along a single route and are complemented by regular short-term exhibitions.
