About the museum
The teacher Josef Hylák (1852–1919) founded the museum in 1892 as the first museum in the Rokycany district. Originally it was run by the Muzejní družstvo Kašpara Šternberka (Kašpar Šternberk Museum Cooperative); since 1924 it has belonged to the town of Radnice.
It is housed in a burgher house from the first third of the 18th century, which was part of the chateau complex and where the administration of the Šternberk estate was seated. After a fire in 1849 it was rebuilt into its present form; until the 1970s it served as housing, and until the 1990s the Šternberk library was on the ground floor. The house has a restored Baroque roof and facade.
The collections document the local region as well as other areas and include ethnographic, historical and natural history material. Also on display is the painted theatre curtain of a local society, which shows the town with its chateau and museum before the fire.
