About the museum
Attempts to found a town museum in Zlín began as early as 1924, but they came to fruition only after 1935, when the Museum of the Town of Zlín was established; at first it existed only on paper. It first opened to the public on 13 February 1944, on one floor of the Tomáš Baťa Memorial. After an air raid on Zlín, the collections were moved to Lešná Castle and later also to Malenovice Castle. In 1953 the Regional Museum was established, and from 1958 it was housed in Zlín Chateau. The current name, Museum of South-East Moravia in Zlín, has been used since 1990.
In 2013 the museum moved into the converted 14th building of the former Baťa factory, where, together with the regional library and gallery, it forms the cultural centre 14|15 Baťa Institute. The building was originally constructed by the Baťa company as a shoe factory hall; during the war it was badly damaged in an air raid, and in 1946–1949 it was replaced by new buildings designed by Jiří Voženílek. After production ended in the 20th century, it fell into disrepair until 2008, when the Zlín Region bought it; the reconstruction cost almost one billion CZK.
The museum’s collections include natural science, archaeological and historical objects, as well as collections linked to the Baťa company. The 14th building houses the permanent exhibitions Princip Baťa and František Bartoš, short-term exhibitions and a library. The museum also includes the 21st building, known as the skyscraper, Malenovice Castle and the Muzeum luhačovického Zálesí (Museum of the Luhačovice Zálesí).
