About the museum
Malenovice Castle was founded in the second half of the 14th century by the Moravian margrave Jan Jindřich, most likely after 1360. It replaced an older fortified manor house whose location is not known. The last noble owner was Count Jaroslav Šternberk, whose statue by Matěj Bednařík stands in the outer bailey.
In recent years the castle has undergone extensive repairs thanks to grants from the Zlín Region, including the facades and structural safeguarding. The chapel of St Anthony of Padua, in poor condition for decades, was reopened to the public in August 2012.
Today the Museum of South-East Moravia in Zlín is housed in the castle rooms. The zoological exhibition Zvířata na Zemi a člověk (Animals on Earth and Man) occupies three halls; in the Baroque forester’s lodge in front of the castle there is the exhibition Dřevo, proutí, sláma (Wood, Wicker, Straw) and seasonal exhibitions. Visitors can climb the castle tower to see the surroundings of Malenovice and watch activity in the masonry where birds nest.
