About the museum
The Lace Museum was established at the end of the 1990s in a reconstructed Renaissance house on Poštovní Street, next to a corner house on the main square. It was founded by Ing. Hana Mizerová-Kynčlová from Rychnov nad Kněžnou, who after 1989 ran the Hana studio, which produced and sold bobbin lace to her own designs, and at the same time built up a personal collection of laces. After her death in 2011, the museum is run by her daughter, Ing. Martina Vakočová.
During the reconstruction of the house, later partitions were removed and historical vaults restored; the smaller hall on the upper floor retains its painted ceiling. On the ground floor there is a sales gallery and a space devoted to the history of the house, including archaeological finds from its restoration. The lace exhibition is on the upper floor, in two historic halls.
The collection presents the development of Czech bobbin lace from its beginnings to the present day and gives an overview of lace production in other European countries. Here you will find Italian, French and Belgian laces, the oldest of which is Brabant lace from around 1600, as well as costumes with lace decoration, sample books of vláčková lace, black Chantilly lace, bobbin-lace tablecloths, pillows and bobbins from around the world. Every season the museum holds an exhibition of works by lacemakers of different generations.
