About the museum
The Volary museum is housed in a log-built house of the Alpine type from 1794 near the square, and it belongs to several Volary houses that visitors can look inside. Volary is the only place in the Czech Republic where such wooden houses stand, and its historic core is protected as a heritage reservation. The museum was set up by the town and is now run by the town's Cultural and Information Centre.
The permanent exhibitions cover three themes. The first presents the Alpine architecture of old Volary and shows why this particular type of house developed here. The second deals with the Zlatá stezka (Golden Trail), along which salt was carried from Passau in Bavaria to Prachatice; on the Czech side, Volary was the largest overnight stop for trading caravans. The third commemorates the death march of prisoners from a concentration camp and the events of early May 1945.
The original clock mechanism from the church tower and torsos of statues from a forest Way of the Cross are also on display. The museum also prepares several seasonal exhibitions each year.
