Rybářské muzeum Vodňany

Fishing museum and school aquaria at the Secondary Fisheries School in Vodňany: history of fish farming, historical equipment and the Amazon aquarium, open in summer.

Opening hoursAdmission 120 Kč

About the museum

The Fishing Museum is located in the grounds of the Secondary Fisheries School in Vodňany. The school was founded in 1920 thanks to its first director, Václav Josef Štěpán. For its first four years it was housed in the town hall, and since 1924 it has been based in a building on the northern edge of the town by the Malá Podvinice pond. Experimental ponds, on which students learn the fishing craft, have been built next to the school since 1921.

The museum exhibition introduces the history of fish farming and shows historical fishing equipment. Dozens of mounted fish and some fish skeletons can be seen. In the fishing corner there are rods, lures and containers in which fish were once transported to holding ponds (sádky).

The tour includes aquaria in the school’s cellar spaces. The largest, the Amazon aquarium, with almost 3,000 litres of water, houses large fish and stingrays from the Amazon basin. The coldwater section has five tanks with about forty species of our native fish; the warmwater section has eleven habitat aquaria with tropical fish. Students look after the aquaria in their free time; in adjacent rooms they also keep reptiles.
