About the museum
The museum was founded on 23 July 1918 on the initiative of the ethnographer Antonín Václavík, who later defined the ethnographic region of Luhačovice Zálesí. Its first home was a small building above the colonnade. In 1943 a further exhibition opened in Vila Lipová. From 1965 the museum was part of the regional museum in what was then Gottwaldov, today the Museum of South-East Moravia in Zlín.
In summer 2007 it moved into the Elektra cultural centre in Luhačovice, where it remains to this day. The collections cover the folk culture of Luhačovice Zálesí, including textiles, objects related to customs and traditions, furniture, ceramics and faience, as well as documents on the history of the spa and the town. The displayed objects include, for example, printing blocks for fabrics, paintings on glass and polychrome sculptures.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to the history and personalities of Luhačovice and to the folk culture of the region, which was shaped by the influences of Valašsko, Slovácko and Haná. A separate cabinet is dedicated to the architect Dušan Jurkovič, whose work is closely bound up with the spa. The museum also organises temporary thematic exhibitions and programmes for schools and the general public.
