About the museum
The chateau at Vizovice was built in the mid-18th century by Heřman Hanibal of Blümegen, a canon of Olomouc and later Bishop of Hradec Králové. It was designed by the Brno architect František Antonín Grimm in the French style. In the second half of the 18th century the building and a French garden were completed, and the interiors were furnished with valuable objects; the Blümegen heirs also moved his picture collection here.
The statues in the garden were made by the Brno sculptor Ondřej Schweigl (1736–1812), who also decorated the chapel of Our Lady Counsellor (Panny Marie Rádkyně). Its interior has survived in authentic form, and after restoration in 2013–2014 the chapel is a separate tour stop. At the beginning of the 19th century the estate passed by inheritance to the Stillfried family, who extended the picture gallery, especially with prints and drawings, and owned it until 1945.
After the war the chateau passed under state administration, and it has been open to the public since 1948. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). The representative rooms have Baroque, Rococo, Empire and Classicist furniture, porcelain and Oriental objects; the private rooms show the domestic atmosphere of the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. The most important part is the picture collection from the 16th–19th centuries, which includes a rare group of Dutch paintings and works by significant Czech artists.
