About the museum

The Butter Museum was founded in 1997 on the initiative of Ing. Vladimíra Sýkorová. The municipality set it up at its own expense, with financial support from the Open Society Fund Prague and the government's Village Renewal Programme. The Agricultural Museum at Kačina Chateau and the Club of Curiosity Collectors gave expert and material help. According to the operator, it is the only museum of its kind in Central Europe.

The exhibition shows how butter was made on farms. Home production was the only method until the end of the 19th century, and only the invention of the centrifuge in 1872 made the gradual transition to industrial production possible. Visitors can see various types of butter churn, centrifuges, butter moulds and decorative butter rollers, butter dishes for serving, and a unique collection of butter wrappers. Most of the exhibits can be tried out in practice. The museum also has a display on the history of the village and holds temporary exhibitions.

Regular events include churning butter in spring and autumn and, since 2000, a nativity scene made of butter, on display from the beginning of Advent until the last Sunday in January. The name of the village has nothing to do with butter; it derives from the family name of the Maslovci.
