About the museum

Roztoky château stands on the site of a fortified manor house from the late 13th or early 14th century, which was rebuilt in the 14th century into a Gothic palace with an oriel chapel. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries the Boryně ze Lhoty knights rebuilt it as a Renaissance château; from 1623 the estate belonged to the Liechtenstein family, and the château was mainly used for economic administration. Later the château was adapted for rented housing, and after 1948 it fell into considerable disrepair; demolition was prevented by the initiative of conservationists and local amateur historians.

The museum was founded in 1957 as the District Local History Museum, seated in the château; from 1955 a local history hall had operated in Tiché údolí (Quiet Valley). In 1963 the museum became a regional museum, and from 1975 it has been the only regional museum organisation of the Central Bohemian Region, under the name Středočeské muzeum v Roztokách u Prahy. After the 2002 flood, a general reconstruction of the château took place in 2011–2013, and in 2014 new historical exhibitions opened to the public.

In the former château barn the multimedia archaeological exhibition Archevita was created in 2022, and it won an award. The museum also includes the studio of painter Zdenka Braunerová from 1903–1904, which is open from April to October. The château grounds include a park with rare trees and sculptures, a museum café and a shop; the museum also uses Braunerův mlýn and a detached workplace in Libčice nad Vltavou.
