About the museum

The Podještědské muzeum (Podještědské Museum) grew out of an ethnographic exhibition that a group of enthusiasts led by the young teacher Václav Havel staged in August 1914. It was officially founded in autumn 1919, and Václav Havel ran it until 1961. It first opened to the public in 1921.

After the occupation of Český Dub in autumn 1938, the collections were taken into the interior of the country, and during the war they were dispersed among several buildings in the Turnov and Mnichovo Hradiště areas. In 1945 they returned to Český Dub and were housed in the Blaschkova villa, where the museum is still based. It reopened to the public on 14 July 1946. The villa was built in 1880–1881 by the textile entrepreneur Franz Schmitt for his son-in-law Konrád Blaschka, and its interior was remodelled in 1906.

From 1985 to 2010 the museum was headed by Tomáš Edel, who in 1991 discovered the Johanitská komenda (Johanite commandery). This Romanesque-Gothic complex, founded in 1237, is now an important part of the museum’s tours.
