About the museum
Hasištejn Castle was probably built in the first decades of the 14th century on a rocky spur above the Prunéřovský stream, most likely by the lords of Šumburk. The first written record dates from 1348, when it is mentioned in the law code Majestas Carolina. After it was captured in 1418 it was acquired by the Lobkowicz family, who fortified it in the late Gothic style and extended it with a palace.
The greatest flourishing came at the beginning of the 16th century under Bohuslav Hasištejnský z Lobkovic, whose court was one of the centres of Renaissance humanism in Bohemia. After his death in 1510 the castle began to decline, and local residents used parts of the buildings as a source of building material; by 1678 only the cold cellar was still in use.
In 1891 and 1892 Emanuel Karsch had the castle secured and repaired, and he also converted the cylindrical tower into a lookout tower. The palace served as a restaurant, which however burned down in the 1970s. Today the castle belongs to the municipality of Místo and is open to the public during visiting hours. The Gothic tower, parts of the palace, the chapel and extensive cellars beneath the courtyard have survived.
