About the museum

The museum is located on Raisovo náměstí (Rais Square) in Trhová Kamenice, in the oldest building of the market town. A fortified pond manor once stood on the site; it was rebuilt in the Baroque style as a parsonage by the church of St Philip and St James (sv. Filipa a Jakuba). Today the building serves as a museum and exhibition space.

In several rooms on the first floor, objects recalling the history of the area around Trhová Kamenice are displayed, for example the priestly vestments of local parish priests and estate owners from the 19th century, period furniture, accessories and clothing. Among the most valuable collection items is a Swedish chest with six working locks, in which soldiers' pay was carried during the Thirty Years' War, and which was found empty in a field outside the market town. One room is devoted to local associations, including the Vzdělávací beseda Neruda (Neruda Educational Society), co-founded by the writer Karel Václav Rais, who spent five years here as a teacher. Another exhibition presents the production of glass Christmas ornaments in the Železné hory (Iron Mountains).

The cellar, into which Czech and imported ghosts have “moved in”, attracts the little visitors; each figure has its own story or legend. The tour is led by a guide who adapts the explanation to the group.
