About the museum

The village of Ležáky, on the edge of the Železné hory (Iron Mountains), was one of the smallest municipalities in the Chrudim district. In June 1942 it became one of the most tragic victims of Nazi persecution. The parachute group SILVER A, with the radio transmitter Libuše sent from London, had found refuge in the village. During the Nazi operation on 24 June 1942, all residents of the village except two children were murdered. The village was burned down and levelled to the ground.

After the war a memorial was established here, which still keeps the memory of the victims alive. The commemorative area includes the sites of the vanished farmsteads, a granite monument from 1945, the Book of Victims, tomb-houses and small memorials to individual victims. The complex also includes the former Švandův mlýn (Švanda Mill) and the original stone footbridges.

In a stone building, the museum presents the permanent exhibition “Ležáky, osada, která nemlčela” (Ležáky, the Village That Did Not Keep Silent). The building is protected as a cultural monument and requires extensive renovation of the roof, thermal insulation and electrical installations. In 2026 the museum is therefore closed, and the Ministry of Culture is preparing a reconstruction and a new exhibition. The commemorative area remains accessible through guided tours. The Památník Ležáky is managed by the contributory organisation Památník Lidice.
