About the museum
The museum's origins go back to 1879, when the teacher Josef Holík called in a local magazine for care of the monuments of our ancestors. The museum was founded in 1880 as the first museum in Šumava and was housed in the town hall. In 1934 it moved into the Renaissance house of the former deanery on the square.
In 1967 the Sušice museum was merged with the museums in Kašperské Hory and Železná Ruda into one Muzeum Šumavy (Šumava Museum); in 2015 the Muzeum Dr. Šimona Adlera in Dobrá Voda was added. The collections focus on Šumava and its surroundings and are known above all for the history of match production and glassmaking.
The best-known exhibit is the mechanical nativity scene from 2004, one of the largest in the Czech Republic. Every two years the museum publishes the regional yearbook Vlastivědný sborník (Local History Yearbook).
