About the museum
The museum in Kašperské Hory was founded in the 1920s thanks to head teacher Rudolf Nowak, who collected more than 3,000 objects. Later collectors expanded the collections, and after 1945 the museum settled permanently in house no. 140 on the square. Since 1967 it has been one of the parts of the Šumava Museum, together with Sušice and Železná Ruda.
The collections include folk culture, Art Nouveau glass from the Lötz glassworks, archaeological finds from the hillforts of Obří hrad, Sedlo and Kašperk, medieval religious sculpture, regional painting and graphic art, and natural history and geological material. The older permanent exhibitions on Šumava art, history and nature date from the late 1970s and early 1980s and are outdated.
Since 1 November 2023 the museum has been under reconstruction, and only the new exhibition on Šumava glassmaking in five halls is open. According to the museum, a new glass museum with step-free access and a renovated depository will be created in the neighbouring house no. 141; completion is planned for the end of 2026.
