About the museum
The museum is located on the ground floor of the Baroque building of the archdeanery in Nepomuk, the birthplace of Saint John of Nepomuk. John of Nepomuk was an important historical figure, and his life and death created a moral and spiritual legacy which, thanks to the Jesuit order, soon spread across the world. His cult had a major influence on Czech art and on the appearance of the landscape.
The exhibition builds on the work of the archdean of Nepomuk, Father Jan Strnad, who founded the Museum of St John's and Other Church Monuments here in 1930. The communist regime abolished the museum in 1950. After 1989 efforts were made to restore the institution, which succeeded thanks to the parish priest, Father Vítězslav Holý; after a general reconstruction of the ground floor of the archdeanery, the St John Museum was solemnly opened on 21 March 2015.
The exhibition contains a collection of works of art and devotional objects from the 18th to 20th centuries, which documents the diversity and richness of the St John cult. The museum is today run by the West Bohemian Museum in Plzeň.
