About the museum
The museum building on the square in Valtice probably arose in the middle of the 17th century and, together with the church, formed the lower town of the château. It served the economic administration of the Liechtenstein estates. At the end of the 19th century the facades of the houses on the square were architecturally unified and the building was rebuilt. In the middle of the 20th century it housed the boarding school of the State Farmers’ School; at the end of the 1970s it was closed and for twenty years fell into disrepair.
The National Agricultural Museum acquired the building at the beginning of the 1990s and moved in after reconstruction in 1994. At first it held smaller exhibitions; the first permanent exhibition was opened later. A further extensive renovation in 2018 and 2019, financed from European funds and by the Ministry of Agriculture, brought three new exhibitions: the National Exhibition of Winemaking, Mysterious Life in the Soil, and a new version of the exhibition The Landscape of the Lednice–Valtice Area. The project received third place in the Gloria Musaealis competition in the category Museum Achievement of the Year 2019.
The National Exhibition of Winemaking is divided into four parts on the history of winemaking and the origin of the vine, viticulture, cellar management and wine tasting. On the ground floor are historic wine presses, including a wooden press from 1719. The exhibition on the landscape of the Lednice–Valtice Area, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, presents the local nature, fish, birds and the nearest architectural monuments.
