About the museum
The Městské muzeum a galerie Břeclav was set up by the town as a contributory organisation in 1995. The origins of museum work in Břeclav go back to 1928, when the Muzejní a vlastivědný spolek (Museum and Local History Society) was founded. During the German occupation the collections were left without a custodian and part of them was lost. After the war, from 1948, the museum joined the Svaz československých muzeí (Union of Czechoslovak Museums) under the name Městské muzeum v Břeclavi, but after 1961 it ceased to exist completely. Only the change in social conditions brought the renewal of the society in 1992, and in 1995 the founding of today's organisation, focused on archaeology, history and ethnography.
Until 2007 the museum was housed in the building of a former Jewish school from the late 19th century, which since 2012 has been called the Liechtenstein House. Since 2008 the staff have had facilities in a converted building under the water tower, where short-term exhibitions are held. In 2000 the museum took over the restored synagogue with a permanent exhibition on Jewish Břeclav. Other sites are the Liechtenstein hunting lodge Pohansko with a multimedia archaeological exhibition, the castle tower, a railway museum in the restored station building, and a civil defence shelter.
Visitors can choose from several separate places, each with its own admission fee and opening hours. The organisation's main seat, the Muzeum pod Vodárnou (Museum under the Water Tower), is accessible without steps and is used mainly for short-term exhibitions.
