About the museum
The château in Valtice grew out of a castle probably founded in the 11th century; from the end of the 14th century it belonged to the Liechtensteins. In the 16th century a four-wing Renaissance building was created, which was kept fortified because of the Turkish threat. From 1608 the château was rebuilt in Baroque style, and the work lasted until around 1684. Karel Eusebius of Liechtenstein had an avenue about seven kilometres long planted towards Lednice, thereby laying the foundation of the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape.
Baroque alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries were led, among others, by Giovanni Giacomo Tencalla and Antonio Beduzzi, who in 1724 to 1729 reworked the interior and built the château chapel. The medieval castle was finally demolished in 1744 to 1745. In 1790 the château theatre opened; the restored theatre reopened in 2015 and is home to the Národní divadelní a taneční centrum (National Theatre and Dance Centre).
After 1945 the château was confiscated and has since belonged to the state. It is managed by the National Heritage Institute. In 1995 it became a national cultural monument, and since 1996 it has been part of the Lednice-Valtice Area on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today it offers several tour routes, including the representative halls, princely apartments and a route for families, and the château cellars hold a significant wine cellar.
