About the museum

Muzeum Vysočiny Třebíč is housed in a castle that was created by rebuilding the buildings of a medieval Benedictine monastery from the 12th century. The castle is a striking landmark above the Jihlava River, north-west of the town centre, and lies right next to the Basilica of St Prokop. The whole complex has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2003. The museum itself was founded as early as 1898 and is today a contributory organisation, which also includes branches in Jemnice and Moravské Budějovice.

Visitors can explore four permanent exhibitions. The World of Non-living Nature (Svět neživé přírody) presents the geology of the Třebíč region and a mineral collection including Moravian moldavites. The World of Portals and Gates (Svět portálů a bran) leads through the former monastery rooms and tells the story of the Benedictine and Capuchin orders and the architectural heritage of the town. The exhibition Valdštejnové na Třebíči shows noble interiors and the life of the family that lived in the castle from the 17th century until the end of the Second World War. The exhibition Lidé. Místa. Osudy. presents the stories of people and places of Vysočina, from faith, art and discovery, through wartime events, to crafts and the emerging industry.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the museum organises short-term exhibitions in the castle stables, in the Galerie Tympanon and in the castle café. It also offers educational programmes for schools, programmes for families and for seniors.
