About the museum
The municipality of Dolní Vilémovice acquired the birth house of the paratrooper Jan Kubiš in 2009, when it was in a dangerous state of disrepair. To restore it and set up a museum, the municipality launched a public fundraising campaign, which raised CZK two million over three years. Donors came from the Czech Republic and abroad, and volunteer fire brigades, hunting associations, military history groups and schools also took part.
Volunteers put in more than a thousand hours clearing out the house and building a new roof. The reconstruction was carried out by a building company from Třebíč. The house was ceremonially opened in 2013, on the centenary of Kubiš’s birth, and in its first year it was visited by around a thousand people.
The permanent exhibition in the house was set up by the Military Historical Institute. Visitors can see Jan Kubiš’s personal belongings and photographs and learn about his fate. The exhibition is popular with primary school pupils. In front of the house stands a bust of Jan Kubiš by the sculptors Buhumíra Smolejová and Stanislav F. Muller.
