About the museum

The museum stands on náměstí 8. května in Hrotovice, next to the Baroque-remodelled chateau, in house No. 2, where the painter František Bohumír Zvěřina was born. A small exhibition of his work had been there before. In 2016–2018 the building was thoroughly reconstructed, the layout was opened up and connected with the neighbouring building, and on 25 September 2018 the town ceremonially opened the new Muzeum Hrotovicka. It has the legal status of a municipal organisational unit, and the tourist information centre is part of the museum.

The exhibition builds on the interest of local enthusiasts from the past and recalls the history of the town and its surroundings, including the vanished village of Mstěnice and the tragedy of 8 May 1945, in which 114 local citizens and 36 Red Army soldiers died. Visitors will find archaeological finds by the amateur archaeologist Jaroslav Palliardi, paintings by František Bohumír Zvěřina from his travels in the Balkans, photographs by Karel Chrást and the workshop of the stationary engine maker Jan Dolník, which forms part of the exhibition on local industry and agriculture. The tour route is supplemented with interactive elements aimed mainly at children.
