About the museum
The medieval fortress in Jaroměřice was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century into a Renaissance château, whose core survives inside today’s baroque building. In 1700–1737 the Questenberg family, the most important owners of the estate, rebuilt it in the baroque style to plans by the Austrian architect Jakob Prandtauer; at the same time a garden in the French style was created.
Jan Adam Questenberk (1678–1752) made Jaroměřice a centre of cultural life, with an extensive library, a gallery, a theatre and its own musical ensemble. The château’s Kapellmeister was the Czech composer František Václav Míča, the author of the first Czech opera, O založení města Jaroměřic (On the Founding of the Town of Jaroměřice). Next to the château rises the high baroque church of St Margaret.
Today the rooms are furnished according to their original purpose and recall both the baroque residence and its 19th-century interior. Visitors can see period musical instruments and objects connected with the château’s musical past, and can walk through the baroque park with its French garden and an English section beyond the Rokytná stream.
