About the museum

The château stands on the site of a water fortress first mentioned in 1476; until 1521 the estate belonged to the lords of Kunštát. In 1584 the fortress passed to the Březnický family of Náchod, and Hron Březnický rebuilt it in Renaissance style. A Baroque reconstruction followed in 1705 to 1711, during which, among other features, the clock tower and the sala terrena were created.

From 1807 to 1945 the château belonged to the Dubský z Třebomyslic family. Emanuel Dubský had it substantially altered to a design by Kajetán Vašíček; in 1902 the north wing with the château theatre burned down. In 1945 the decrees of President Beneš deprived the last member of the family, Albrecht Dubský, of the château. From 1952 the château was adapted for public access under the architect Břetislav Štorm, and in 2001 it was declared a national cultural monument.

In 2021 to 2023 the château garden was restored to its late 19th-century form, including the orangery, a greenhouse and a fig house from 1835 with a sliding roof. The tours also include an exhibition on the writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, who spent time at the château.
