About the museum
The Polabské muzeum (Polabí Museum) has been housed since 1906 in the building of the oldest school in Poděbrady, which has medieval origins and was rebuilt in 1846. In 2009 and 2010 the building underwent a demanding reconstruction, including the renewal of the permanent exhibitions. The museum also includes the protected medieval hospital from 1444, known as Kunhuta, which is used for exhibitions.
The permanent exhibition Příběh Polabí introduces significant periods in the history of the Earth and of people in the Polabí region, up to nearly the 20th century. It begins with remains of life in the Mesozoic sea and continues with the fauna and flora of the Quaternary, the life of people in the Bronze Age, the Roman period and the Migration Period, and the world of the early Slavs, including the Slavník stronghold at nearby Libice. Another part is devoted to the Baroque and Renaissance and to the devastation of the Polabí region during the Thirty Years' War. A picture gallery shows how the town of Poděbrady changed, from the oldest view from 1650 to the first half of the 20th century.
Among the highlights are a model of the earth's layers based on a borehole from 1930, a hoard of denarii from the 10th century found near Poděbrady, a working model of a mineral water bottling plant from the 1920s and 1930s, and a tactile exhibition. Visitors can strike their own denarius on a minting press and try the work of prehistoric millers in a play corner. Two exhibition halls are used for lectures and short-term exhibitions.
