About the museum
The Semenec Natural History Museum was established on the edge of Týn nad Vltavou in 1994 as a natural history station and civic association called the Station “Pomoc přírodě” (“Help for Nature”). Its main mission was practical nature conservation: a rescue station for disabled animals, breeding of endangered species and their release into the wild. The station also educated children and the public in environmental awareness.
In 1995 collections of medicinal plants and a display of forest communities began to take shape; a year later a rock collection was added, followed in later years by a palaeontological collection, a pine collection and a rose garden. Since 2006 the site has been open to the public at weekends, and during the week it hosts educational programmes for schools. Since 2011 the station has been called the Přírodovědné muzeum Semenec (Semenec Natural History Museum).
Today the museum is run by Muzeum Semenec, o.p.s. (a public benefit company). Across four hectares the collections are interwoven with play and learning elements, trails, water games and outdoor activities. For schools the museum offers educational and residential programmes, and for the public it organises events and adult education.
