About the museum
Medieval passages run beneath the centre of Týn nad Vltavou, leading from the town château through the courtyard to beneath Náměstí Míru. They were probably excavated in the 15th century in places where the cellars of burgher houses once stood. The total length of the passages beneath the square exceeds 160 metres, and most of them are open to the public.
Guides take visitors along the route Středověké podzemní chodby (Medieval Underground Passages): they descend to the bottom of a well and see traces of hand tools and the so-called nadlom, an unfinished ascent to the surface. The route must be walked in both directions, so the tour is almost 300 metres long. On the way back to daylight there are two exhibitions on the educational trails Velký Depot and Potahová stezka.
The second route, the Zámecké sklepení (Château Cellar), shows the historic cellars from the time when the Prague archbishops ruled the town and the estate; they served as a pantry and food store. Tours are organised by the tourist information centre, which is housed in the restored château premises on Náměstí Míru. Other parts of the extensive underground still await opening to the public.
