About the museum

The R-S 72 Nízká infantry bunker is part of the Czechoslovak heavy fortifications in the Orlické hory. It was concreted in September 1937 and assigned to the Kunvald sub-section, which fell under the engineer group command in Rokytnice v Orlických horách. The two-storey building was designed to withstand hits from artillery shells up to 180 mm calibre. It had two firing rooms with twin heavy machine guns, and in the lower floor a room for a 9 cm casemate mortar. The garrison numbered 26 men.

In 1996 members of the Klub historického vojenství Brno founded the free association Spolek R-72. Its main aim is to reconstruct the bunker to its condition in September 1938. The association has cleared the building of rubble, fitted copies of the original armoured doors and embrasures, is restoring the earth covering, brick partitions and plaster, and has replaced the armoured bell with a replica.

The bunker is also a small museum of Czechoslovak fortifications. The exhibition places emphasis on fortress mortars, and the association's members have long been completing a model of a mortar that can move on the original gun carriage. The association also collects objects related to the construction of the fortifications and studies archival documents.
