About the museum
The museum’s origins date back to 1891, when Leopold Čihák, a native of the town, donated his collection of documents, maps and other objects to the town, and the town council founded the museum on that basis. In 1931 the newly formed District Museum Society took over the collection, and after its dissolution in 1950 the town managed it. From 1960 the museum was called the Museum of Gold Mining and Processing in the Jílové Region, and from the 1960s it gradually became professional.
The current name, Regionální muzeum v Jílovém u Prahy (Regional Museum in Jílové u Prahy), has been used since 1 January 1991, and since 2003 the museum has been a contributory organisation of the Central Bohemian Region. It is housed in a historic house on Masarykovo náměstí, which was reconstructed in the 1970s and 1980s; the neighbouring stable serves as a hall for exhibitions and social events. In 2025 and 2026 the courtyard and retaining wall are being repaired while the museum remains open.
The core of the collections consists of documents on gold mining in the Jílové mining district, which was among the most important Czech gold deposits. The museum is the founder of the Jílovské zlaté doly (Jílové Gold Mines) educational trail and manages three accessible adits, which show mining in the Middle Ages, in the 18th century and in the mid-20th century. The new gold exhibition uses augmented reality and builds on the legacy of the long-time gold specialist Petr Morávek.
