About the museum
Automobile designer Ferdinand Porsche was born in 1875 in the house in Vratislavice nad Nisou, today part of Liberec, and lived there until the age of eighteen. The company Škoda Auto bought the building in 2011. Until then, numerous alterations had removed its original appearance, and only parts of the street façade had survived the many interventions.
The survey and restoration project took place in 2012 to 2014. The authors were Prague architects from the studio Hlaváček architekti, in cooperation with the Stuttgart agency Jangled Nerves. It was found that the rear annex and the gables of the house had survived best, and the newly designed shape of the building is based on period photographs. The extensive reconstruction was completed in 2016 and returned to the house the proportions and appearance of 1875. A new service building was built behind the house, with a ticket office, a souvenir shop and refreshments.
Today the house is run by Škoda Muzeum as its branch. The modern exhibition is devoted to technical creativity, mobility and the Porsche family, and shows the path to individual mobility, which culminated in the Volkswagen car.
