About the museum
The Oblastní galerie v Liberci was founded in 1953 and is now called Galerie Lázně Liberec. It is housed in the former municipal baths on Masarykova třída, built in 1900–1902 in the neo-Renaissance style by the Viennese architect Peter Paul Brang. After extensive reconstruction the building opened to the public as a gallery on 28 February 2014; the reconstruction received the national Grand Prix of Architects.
The gallery's collection numbers over 23,000 works – paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures – and focuses mainly on European and Czech art. The existing permanent exhibitions, including those on the collector and patron Heinrich von Liebieg and on the golden age of Dutch art, were cancelled in 2026; new permanent exhibitions are due to open in autumn 2027. Until then the gallery presents short-term exhibitions of contemporary art.
A Lázeňská zahrada soch (Spa Sculpture Garden) is being created in the garden, where since September 2024 the sculpture Jizerský Enti by Matouš Lipus has stood. The building also houses the Design Shop and the Nordbeans Lázně café. The exhibition spaces are closed from 13 July to 16 October 2026 because of the modernization of the lighting.
